Keith Poole: "This is a richly deserved acknowledgement of the extraordinary work the digital team have put in."
According to News UK, TheSun.co.uk and its affiliated brands extended its lead over MailOnline in May – a month which featured a Royal Wedding as well as Love Island and World Cup build-up.
The Sun Online saw 31.7 million unique visitors in May, with MailOnline and the Metro (who are combined for the sake of comScore) on 28.9 million, the Independent on 25.9 million and the Guardian on 23.7 million.
It marks, say the publishers, a significant increase in The Sun's lead over MailOnline, with a 1.5 million increase in just one month on April's figure of 30.2 million for The Sun. The Sun Online is also now bigger than twitter in the UK, which recorded 29.6 million unique visitors in May.
Keith Poole, Editor of The Sun Online, said: “This is a richly deserved acknowledgement of the extraordinary work the digital team have put in since coming out behind the paywall three years ago. We are particularly pleased to have secured top spot – again - in a month including the Royal Wedding, when we were at the top of our game.”
Tony Gallagher, Editor in Chief of The Sun, said: "To lead the way for the second month in a row is testament to the work we've put in to get to the top spot. The Sun's bold and brave DNA runs through both our print and digital operations and it's no surprise that our mix of news, showbiz, sport and lifestyle is still such a hit."
