As reported by the Newspaper Society: In addition to the South London Press, the 147-year-old paid-for title bought four years ago by Tindle Newspapers, readers will see new titles in Streatham, Brixton, Wimbledon, Wandsworth, Dulwich, Deptford & New Cross and Forest Hill & Sydenham.
The publishers have chosen the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to launch the titles, with pages and pages of pictures of people taken from the hundreds of street parties in South London over this weekend’s celebrations.
These seven titles will lead the renewed Tindle Newspapers campaign for local community newspapers throughout the capital and the rest of the country.
Chairman Sir Ray Tindle said: “Those who say the local press is finished are wrong. This group owns many community newspapers around the country which are doing well in both circulation and advertising terms.”
“The South London Press editor, Hannah Walker, and staff have rallied wholeheartedly behind the hyperlocal launches and have been magnificent,” continued Sir Ray.
"South London Press managing director Peter Edwards is leading the operation from Streatham. He is confident of its total success."
Editor-in-chief Hannah Walker said: “These are challenging times for all newspapers and in the fast-changing world of journalism we need to let South Londoners know that we are there for them.
"We are a trustworthy, reliable and solid source of information. Local news is as important as ever and we are determined to rise to the formidable challenge and champion our readers and our newspapers.”
Brian Doel, chief executive of Tindle, said he was convinced this was the way forward for newspapers in large conurbations.
NS president Geraldine Allinson and the Society of Editors director Bob Satchwell are among those set to join the South London Press staff at the launch party for the new titles at Streatham.
