In what was described as a “vibrant, witty, colourful and energetic read” a special Award went to i, the new launch from the Independent stable.
The Grand Prix, an award given to the very best of best of The 2011 Newspaper Award entries, went to Weekend from The Irish Independent, a publication that since 2000 has won three awards and been on the winner’s podium every other year.
For the second year running The Daily Telegraph took the coveted National Newspaper of the Year award, while Newsprinters (Broxbourne) took the sought-after Newspaper Printer of the Year gaining almost universal praise for its “top, top quality”. Regional Newspaper of the Year went to the Daily Echo, Bournemouth which was praised for its “first class layout and design.”
Gary Cullum, director of Newspaper Awards, says: “This was a vintage year for The Newspaper Awards. We had some truly fantastic winners and it was great to see so many close run battles in many of the categories. It’s been such a tough year for the newspaper industry so it’s great to see so much innovation and excellence being demonstrated by our newspapers, both in print and digital format.”
