Standard names its Olympics team

The London Evening Standard has announced its Olympic team as part of its extended coverage in the build-up to the 2012 Games, with the One Year To Go date just one month away.

Editor Geordie Greig said: "The London Evening Standard is already recognised for providing the best and most extensive coverage of the 2012 Olympics. Next year will be critical to the success of the Games and will impact on London as a whole. Our Olympics team will ensure that we keep the spotlight on the preparations and our readers informed with up-to-the-minute reports, high quality features, the latest dramatic pictures and special Olympic issues of ES Magazine."

Evening Standard Deputy Editor Sarah Sands (pictured) will be the Olympics Executive co-ordinating coverage.

Matthew Beard is promoted to Olympics Editor. Matthew has covered three Olympics - Athens, Beijing and Vancouver - and was recently highly commended in the Sports Journalists' Association awards for his coverage of London 2012. He joined the Standard in May 2007 as Sports News Correspondent.

Deputy News Editor Jack Lefley will also take on the role of Olympics News Editor. Jack joined the Evening Standard in 2007 as a senior reporter and has covered international events including the World Cup.

Matt Majendie becomes Olympic Correspondent. Matt has written regularly on the Olympic athletes for the Standard sports pages including the Standard Bearers columns and the weekly Big Olympic Interview. These have included Sir Chris Hoy, Ben Ainslie and Mark Cavendish.

City writer Lucy Tobin becomes Olympic City Correspondent. Lucy joined the Evening Standard as a City reporter in 2008 covering transport, pharmaceuticals, defence, energy and personal finance for the business pages, and writes a Friday column on the Olympics and business. She was named runner up regional journalist of the year at the Headlinemoney Awards, was highly commended as Journalist to Watch at the WorkWorld Media Awards, and shortlisted for the Media category of the Women to Watch awards.

Features executive Jackie Annesley, who has overseen Olympics supplements for the Standard, will edit special Olympic issues and projects in the paper including One Year To Go supplements for July and August for the Olympics and Paralympics.
