Christmas Cash Injection for East Anglian Newsagents

The NFRN has welcomed a Christmas cash injection for newsagents in East Anglia following the news that regional publisher Archant is to increase the cover prices on its newspaper and magazine titles, accompanied by pro rata terms for retailers.

The news followed a meeting between the publishing group and NFRN officials during which the Federation laid bare its concerns about the future for members when price rises were introduced but terms were not maintained.

The cover price rises on titles ranging from the Eastern Daily Press, the East Anglian Daily Times through to weekly titles like the Great Yarmouth Mercury, Beccles & Bungay Journal and North Norfolk News through to magazines including the Essex Life, Hertfordshire Life and Anglia Afloat, will result in an extra £1million of revenue into retailers’ tills in 2013 and in excess of £250,000 of extra profit, says the NFRN.

All the price rises take effect from the week commencing December 24.

NFRN Eastern Counties President Debbie Turner said: “We congratulate Archant for backing local independent newsagents. The NFRN and Archant have worked constructively together for some time to see how we can stem declining sales so it is great they are showing support to the independent sector and I would urge all Eastern Counties members to reciprocate and give Archant titles their full support.”
