There were almost 1000 entries all of exceptionally high standard, say the publishers, and the winning group were hand-picked by a panel of ELLE editors, including Editor-In-Chief Lorraine Candy, Fashion Director Anne-Marie Curtis, Beauty Director Sophie Beresiner, Art Director Miette Johnson, and Editor-At-Large Annabel Brog.
The 11 winners, from London, Hampshire, Essex, Sussex, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Bristol, Cambridgeshire and Worthing, will spend the next few weeks putting together ELLE’s second ever Edited by the Interns issue, in association with Nokia, for October.
Ahead of their internship, the interns were treated to a special ‘orientation day’ at ELLE’s headquarters in Soho on Wednesday, June 26 and were each given a new Nokia to document their experiences with.
The orientation day, run by the ELLE team and Nokia, included guest speakers Sunday Times columnist Katie Glass and New Statesman deputy editor Helen Lewis, a session entitled ‘Nokia’s inspirations and challenges”, presentation on the vision behind ELLE, how to break into journalism, tutorials on their new Nokia handset, and first interview and CV writing tips from a recruitment expert. They also attended a photo shoot at the Worx Studio.
A number of last year’s winning interns went on to work in the fashion, arts and media industries, as well as continuing to freelance for – and be mentored by – the ELLE team, so it’s an exciting opportunity for everyone involved.
