This is an article posted to the M.E.N website last Saturday:
After 150 years your newspaper is starting a new chapter with the historic launch of the M.E.N on Sunday
We’ll make history when we publish the very first edition of the M.E.N on Sunday.
After 150 years of reporting on all aspects of Greater Manchester life, the Manchester Evening News is launching a Sunday paper.
We’ll make history when we publish the very first edition of the M.E.N. On Sunday on February 10.
In the fast-changing world of the media, we feel the M.E.N. brand is at an all-time high. And we think a fast-paced city like Manchester deserves a seven-day-a-week newspaper. So, we’ve decided to give you even greater coverage of our fantastic region.
Editor-in-chief Darren Thwaites said: "This is a big deal for Manchester and a big story for the newspaper industry. Your loyal support, alongside the exciting development of our region, has given us the ambition to expand, while many others contract."
When our founding editor Mitchell Henry first launched the M.E.N. back in 1868 he spoke of an ‘honest aim to serve the public interest’.
Throughout the M.E.N.’s 150 year history, our journalists have strived to investigate the issues that matter to our readers and scrutinise the authorities that govern our great city and surrounding boroughs.
From VE Day to the Arena bombing, from United’s treble win to the Munich air disaster, we’ve covered both moments of joy and great tragedy.
The M.E.N. on Sunday will enable us to carry on that work every day of the week as we devote our news pages to in-depth investigations and hard hitting news stories.
Darren added: “With most publishers and most politicians stuck in their Westminster bubble, we’ll be keeping it real here in Manchester. We’ll shout loud about the issues that matter to you, always demanding the best for our region and holding people to account.
"We have a team of talented journalists passionate about the city they serve. They’ll leave no stone unturned in digging out the best, biggest and most important stories for Manchester.”
Our newest publication will also allow us to bring you even more coverage from City and United – two of the biggest football clubs in the world.
The new title will also include a 24-page weekend supplement, including City Life, Travel, 7-day TV listings, film, fashion and puzzles.
