NS to launch Making a Difference campaign

The NS is launching a new national initiative this year to showcase the role of local media – in print, online, on mobile and social media - in making a difference to the lives of ordinary individuals in local communities.

The Newspaper Society says: Called Making a Difference, the initiative will highlight local media’s unique ability to campaign for change whether it’s raising funds for a life-saving operation, keeping a day centre open, campaigning for justice or cleaning up a local park.

Linked with Local Newspaper Week 2014 (12-18 May), Making a Difference will find people who have been helped by their local newspaper in some way and highlight their stories at a national level, demonstrating local newspapers’ ability to make a real difference to people’s lives through campaigning, investigative journalism and news reporting.

Participating newspapers will be asked to nominate an individual or group who the paper has helped in the past year or so when they had nowhere else to turn. Editors are being asked to fill in a short questionnaire about Making a Difference and Local Newspaper Week before 27 February.
