Press Freedom Theme for Local Newspaper Week

This year’s Local Newspaper Week will be themed around press freedom, highlighting the importance of local newspapers freedom to scrutinize authority and hold the powerful to account.

According to the Newspaper Society: The Week will be held between 13 –19 May, the same week as The Regional Press Awards and the NS AGM which be held in London on 17 May.

This year, the Week will aim to highlight how local newspapers’ ability to underpin local democracy is dependent upon their freedom to report freely without being restricted.

Hundreds of daily and weekly local papers take part each year. Last year, papers highlighted their role in telling the story of important national events the London Olympics and Diamond Jubilee.

Contributors included The Queen who wrote an article highlighting the importance of local papers as a “fundamental part of the fabric of our communities.”

A website with material for newspapers to use during this year’s Week will go live in the next few weeks.
