BBC Top of the Pops Magazine celebrates 250th issue

BBC Top of the Pops Magazine celebrates the release of its 250th issue today, Wednesday 21st May.

The landmark issue includes birthday celebrations with a host of pop stars including The Vamps; Top of the Pop’s latest intern Joey Essex joins the team for some work experience; Britain’s Got Talent’s teen sensation Bailey McConnell on his new-found fame; and One Direction on the cover.

The magazine is also hosting a special 250th issue gig on Wednesday 21st May featuring M.A.D, Fright Club TV, 2012 Britain’s Got Talent finalists Loveable Rogues, The X Factor’s Sam Callahan and four-piece girl band Neon Jungle, in front of a live audience of 160 Top of the Pops Magazine readers who won free ticket for the event. The gig is hosted by CBBC’s Aiden Davis will be streamed live on sugarscape.com from 6pm.

According to Immediate Media, Top of the Pops Magazine launched in March 1995, featuring Suede’s Brett Anderson and East 17’s Tony Mortimer on the cover, and has gone on to sell 47 million copies over the last 249 issues. The highest-selling issue, published in July 1997, featured Peter Andre on the cover and a free inflatable Spice Girls doll, sold 540,000 copies. The magazine also has the amazing claim to fame of creating The Spice Girls legendary nicknames – Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Posh and Baby – helping them on their way to become the most successful female group of all time!

Published under licence by Immediate Media Co since 2011, Top of the Pop Magazine is the UK’s best selling teen magazine, a position it has held since its fifth issue. McFly have appeared on the cover the most times, with 19 covers, closely followed by One Direction on 18 covers.
