Guardian Weekly 90th Birthday

Guardian Weekly celebrated its 90th birthday with a special eight-page supplement and an online archive of republished stories spanning the weekly’s history.

The weekly launched on the 4 July 1919 to coincide with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. At such a turbulent time in European history the weekly’s intention was to create greater international understanding – an aim it continues to this day.

Natalie Bennett (pictured), Editor of Guardian Weekly, said: “For 90 years Guardian Weekly has been providing readers from around the globe with the cream of Guardian coverage focusing on politics, news and culture. Our supplement presents a wonderful retrospective from across the weekly’s history including news stories on the end of the war, the Middle East, the American elections and a selection of reader’s letters. A truly fitting way to celebrate our birthday.”

To celebrate its anniversary the weekly contains eight-page supplement featuring highlights from the last nine decades of reporting, themed around war and peace, international news, life and times and readers letters. Online, for nine consecutive days the weekly will be republishing historical articles starting with an account from 1919 of a British soldier working with Chinese labourers in France.

This celebratory issue will be promoted in key global markets such as the USA, Greece, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Guardian Weekly is available in the UK and worldwide through subscriptions via guardianweekly.co.uk.
