Macclesfield Express prints special edition

The Macclesfield Express put out an extra edition for the first time in living memory to bring its readers news of a historic decision on the future of the town's centre.

Five change pages, including a showpiece front page, featured in the special change edition, which was produced to report on the approval of plans to build a new £90 million pound shopping centre and cinema complex.

An eight hour meeting to discuss the plans was scheduled to begin just as the main edition of the paper was hitting the streets on Wednesday.

The extra edition was in the shops for the following morning.

Express editor Gareth Tidman said: "This was a historic decision on the future of Macclesfield town centre.

"We felt that we needed to pull out all the stops so that we were able to provide the in-depth coverage, reaction and analysis our readers have come to expect from us in the immediate aftermath of the decision."

It comes one week after the paper launched its own readers' referendum on the plans.

The results of the poll, which showed that 82 per cent of the 348 people who took part were against the plans, were announced on the front page of the paper on the day of meeting.

Strict rules were applied to the 'Readers' Referendum' to stop it being unduly influenced by individuals with voting was restricted to forms printed in the paper, with no photocopies allowed.

Mr Tidman said: "We were delighted to get the number of votes we did in just two weeks. It really showed the strength of depth of feeling in the town.

"We realise that we would have got more votes if we had taken the poll online but felt it would have been too vulnerable to abuse.

"It allowed our readers to make their views clear on a subject affecting everyone in the town."
