The six newspapers nominated for National Newspaper of the Year are: The Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, The Guardian, I, Irish Examiner, The Sun and The Times. The sought after Newspaper Printer of the Year will be fought out between Newsprinters’ three print facilities, Guardian Print Centre. Interpress (Ireland) and Peterboro’ Web.
This year saw a particularly strong entry across all digital categories, say the organisers. Digital Innovation of the Year features an eclectic nominations list ranging from The Daily Telegraph’s interactive supplement and the FT’s web app to hyper local initiatives such as the student initiative from SMG Media and One & Other.
One of 2012’s new categories, News Photograph of the Year, will see national newspaper photographers including The Sunday Times’ Paul Conroy and The Guardian’s Tom Jenkins pitted against regional newspaper photographers such as the Yorkshire Post’s Simon Hulme and John Kent from the Bristol Evening Post.
The Newspaper Awards features 19 categories designed to showcase the best in both printed and digital media. All the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 25 April at the London Hilton.
Gary Cullum, director of Newspaper Awards, says: “This year has seen a tremendous level of entry to the Awards both in terms of quality and quantity, and that’s great to see in such a tough year for the industry. From the major national newspapers to fantastic hyperlocal websites and from as far afield as China, Bali, Vietnam and Brazil, our judges scrutinised well over 1,000 newspapers over a gruelling two days of judging. Their final verdict will be delivered on the evening of 25 April at the London Hilton.”
