Gary Cullum, director of Newspaper Awards, says: “We’ve had a record level of entries this year and our panel of judges have scrutinised well over 1,000 print and digital newspapers to reach their shortlist. Some of the most interesting and exciting entries have come from the Digital and Printed Innovation categories which proves that our industry is still very much at the vanguard of newspaper publishing.”
The six nominees battling to win National Newspaper of the Year are The Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, The Independent’s ‘I’, the Irish Examiner, Metro and The Times. In the Weekend category the Yorkshire Post and Teesside’s Sunday Sun are up against huge national titles like The Sunday Times and FT Weekend.
In the Digital News Service of the Year category new, hyperlocal sites like the Exeter Daily and KentishTowner are fighting it out with traditional big hitters like The Guardian and The Sunday Times.
The Regional Newspaper of the Year category was particularly strong with some major regional titles nominated including the Yorkshire Evening Post, Hull Daily Mail, Dorset Echo, Ipswich Star and the Express & Star.
The Newspaper Awards features 18 categories designed to showcase the best in both printed and digital media. All the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 24 April at the London Hilton.
