Northcliffe appoints Dean Barber

Dean Barber, currently acting Circulation Director at the Nottingham Post, has been appointed to the new role of Northcliffe Media Sales Development Director for Newspaper Sales.

Dean (pictured) began his career at his home town newspaper, the Leicester Mercury, when he joined Northcliffe back in October 1991 as a Circulation Representative.

Over the past twenty years Dean has been promoted through several management roles within the circulation function and has worked in numerous Northcliffe centres including Tunbridge Wells, Hull and Gloucester. He held a group role in 1998, training Circulation Managers and personnel across the company, before returning to Gloucestershire as Circulation Manager for both titles in 2000.

In 2001 Dean was appointed as the youngest ever Circulation Director within Northcliffe, at The Sentinel in Stoke, before his role was widened several years later to encompass the weekly titles in Tamworth. More recently, the ‘simplify’ re-structure saw him take up the challenge in Nottingham over the past 6 months.

Dean offers a wealth of experience and innovation to this new role, which will be instrumental in driving sales of our titles and circulation revenues across the Northcliffe portfolio. His brief will be to offer support and guidance to Publishers, MDs and coach and develop local circulation departments. He will also assume overall responsibility for Paul Jenkins and the Home Delivery Contact Centre in Swansea.

Dean said: “I’m looking forward to the new role and am excited about the challenge and the opportunity to help colleagues across Northcliffe. Newspaper sales remains one of the biggest challenges to the success of Northcliffe and providing our advertisers with an audience to generate response. I will offer support to those centres that require assistance and feel the role will allow best practice and individual successes to be shared across all of our titles more effectively.”

Steve Auckland, Group Managing Director of Northcliffe Media, said: “I am delighted to have Dean on board in this key role. We need to further develop and innovate our newspaper sales departments, he’ll work with the local teams to drive new ideas forward.

Dean will take up his new position with immediate effect and will report in to Margaret Hilton, Group Commercial Advisor.”
