The Society of Editors Press Awards for national newspapers represent the finest of the country’s rich talent in journalism, say the organisers. Recognising reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists and cartoonists, designers, photographers, scoops and campaigns the awards culminate with the News and Sports Teams of the Year and coveted Newspaper of the Year titles.
The Sunday Times leads the nominations league table with 21, the Daily Mail has 18 and The Guardian has 17. The Times and The Daily Telegraph have 16, The Mail on Sunday has 15 and the Daily Mirror has 13. The Observer and Financial Times have 9, The Sun has 7 and the London Evening Standard has 5. The Sunday People has 4, the Press Association has 3 and The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent on Sunday have 2. The Sunday Mirror, Reuters and i have one each.
There are 28 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award and winners will be announced at a glittering gala dinner at the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square in London on Tuesday 1 April 2014.
The event is the most prestigious in the industry’s calendar, says the Society of Editors, with more than 400 editors and journalists coming together to salute the quality and success of national newspaper journalism in print and on corresponding digital platforms.
The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for media freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.
Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001, Unison, Nikon, the Gorkana Group, Reuters, EY, HW Fisher, L’Oreal and the Press Association. The awards are supported by the NPA, in association with the Journalists’ Charity and the British Journalism Review.
Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “Yet again the judges were astounded and delighted by the range and diversity of the output of national newspapers. Their combined qualities are unparalleled in the world.”
