Reach has announced that Chloe Hubbard, currently UK editor at the Independent, has been named as the next editor-in-chief of the Mirror, following Caroline Waterston’s departure at the end of the year. As part of her remit she will also lead the group-wide magazines teams.
Chloe began her career as a sports reporter at her local title and now Reach brand, the North Devon Journal, where she became editor in 2012. Following a period with several local and national news organisations, she moved into online leadership roles; serving as a news editor at both BBC Sport and MailOnline, as well as assistant editor online at the Telegraph, and editor-in-chief for Stuff.co.nz in Auckland.
Following her move to the Independent in 2020, Chloe was eventually promoted to UK editor, responsible for managing all domestic editorial operations. During her time at the Independent she drove consistent year-on-year audience growth and relaunched the Independent’s Pride List - a yearly celebration of Britain’s most influential LGBT+ people, added Reach. She also revamped the title’s live news approach for major events including the Women’s Euros, Olympics and the General Election, catapulting the Independent to be one of the most read commercial newsbrands in the UK by the end of 2024.
Chloe said: “It is a privilege to take the reins at the Mirror at such a pivotal moment in history and at a time when the industry is experiencing seismic change. The Mirror plays a vital role in championing progressive politics, publishing entertaining and agenda-setting stories, and holding power to account at a time when the truth told by journalists is more important than ever.
“There's so much potential to grow audience online for both the Mirror and magazines, as well as continuing to curate these beloved British institutions in print for readers across the country. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in with the teams and building on the exceptional work already happening across the newsrooms.”
Chloe will report into Tom Hunt, editorial director (Brands), at Reach, who said: "We're delighted to welcome Chloe Hubbard to lead the Mirror and magazines teams. She has a stellar track record in the industry, has driven consistent growth during her years at the Independent, and I know comes full of excitement and ideas for these iconic brands."
Chloe’s start date will be announced in the coming days.
