According to the Scottish Press Awards, the five local newspapers shortlisted for the winning title are; Ayrshire Post, John O’Groats Journal, Largs and Millport Weekly News, Lennox Herald and The Inverness Courier.
In 2021 the Lennox Herald won the Weekly Newspaper of the Year title and is facing competition this year from other regional titles to retain its award.
This year’s judging panel was led by Denise West – previous managing director of Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail Ltd, and chief commercial officer of DC Thomson Media.
Denise West, chair of the Scottish Press Awards judges, said: “The quality of entries was as high as ever, and a tremendous reflection on the skill and effort of journalists and publishers across Scotland in meeting the undiminished challenges facing the sector. The judges had a difficult task producing the final shortlist and my thanks go to them all for the rigorous way they set about the challenge.
"Our thanks also go to all who entered the awards, and we hope our finalists have a great night on September 21, win or lose. "
The organiser says that the award ceremony is due to take place on 21 September at DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central. The evening will see the journalism world coming together to celebrate another year of news reporting as well as specialist recognition in categories such as; arts and entertainment journalist of the year, food and drink writer of the year, financial business journalist of the year, student of the year, interviewer of the year and young journalist of the year.
The awards programme, run by the Scottish Newspaper Society, hosts the annual awards ceremony aimed at recognising excellence across national, regional and digital journalism from across the country.
John McLellan Scottish Newspaper Society director said: “As ever, the Scottish Newspaper Society is extremely grateful to Denise and all our judges for giving up their valuable time to select our finalists, and to our sponsors and our programme coordinators Event Consultants Scotland who without whom the awards would not be the great success they are."
