Shortlists announced for National Press Awards

Shortlists for Britain’s premier awards celebrating the best of British national newspaper journalism have been announced.

There are 33 categories in the awards. Shortlists for the team awards and the Newspaper of the Year award will be announced later.

The Press Awards which will culminate with a glittering gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel, Lancaster Gate, on Tuesday 20 March, 2012, are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds will help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for press freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell (pictured), executive director of the Society of Editors said: “While 2011 may not go down in history as the newspaper industry’s finest year its readers are still served by the world’s most vibrant and diverse national press. Despite unprecedented attention and negative comment the papers and their journalists produced many terrific stories that informed and entertained.

“Panels of independent judges and those nominated by their newspapers have pored over more than 650 entries to produce the shortlists. They have had the privilege of seeing and reading a mountain of brilliant journalism.”

The Lancaster London Hotel will provide the backdrop for one of the most prestigious events in the industry's calendar with more than 400 editors, writers and columnists coming together to salute the quality, and success of national newspaper journalism.
