Shortlists announced for national press awards

Shortlists for the Society of Editors Press Awards, celebrating the best of British national newspaper journalism, have been announced.

The Society of Editors Press Awards for national newspapers represent the cream of the country’s rich talent in journalism, says the SoE. They include top class reporters and correspondents, hard-hitting commentators, gloriously funny columnists and cartoonists, designers, photographers, scoops and campaigns. The awards culminate with team prizes and the coveted Newspaper of the Year title.

The Times leads the nominations league table with 24, The Daily Telegraph has 20 and the Daily Mail has 19. The Sunday Times has 17 and The Guardian has 16, The Daily Mirror has 11 and the Independent has 11. The Sun has 10, The Mail on Sunday has 8, the Financial Times, 7, The Observer, 5, the London Evening Standard, 4, Sunday Mirror, 4, the Press Association and Reuters, 3, The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent on Sunday have 2 and the Sunday Post and I have one each.

There are 29 categories in The Press Awards and winners will be announced at a glittering gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel, Lancaster Gate, on Thursday 7 March, 2013.

The event is one of the most prestigious in the industry's calendar with more than 400 editors, and journalists coming together to salute the quality, and success of national newspaper journalism.

The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds will help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for press freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell (pictured), executive director of the Society of Editors said: “These really are the best of the best. The judges have faced a huge task studying the rich output from the whole range of Britain’s diverse national newspapers. It is also a wonderful privilege because few people can see it all every day or every week. I defy anyone to find a greater range or higher standards of journalism.”
