Shortlists announced for Regional Press Awards

Shortlists for the Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards celebrating the best of British regional newspaper journalism in 2012 have been announced.

There are 22 categories in the awards which will culminate with an Oscars-style lunchtime awards ceremony to be held at Savoy Place, in London, just off the Embankment at IET London, 2 Savoy Place, London, WC2R 0BL on 17 May.

The awards recognise brilliant journalism in UK local and regional newspapers in print, online and any other news platform, say the organisers.

The Society of Editors Regional Press Awards are made possible by the lead sponsorship of UK Power Networks. They are supported by Asda and Foot Anstey solicitors and are held in association with HoldTheFrontPage and the Press Association.

The Society of Editors, which has been supported by Camelot since 2001, organises the awards in conjunction with the Newspaper Society on behalf of the industry.

Chairman of the judges Paul Horrocks said: “The judges had a difficult task across all of the categories. In many cases any one of shortlisted candidates could be a winner and it s only after painstaking scrutiny and careful debate that the winners emerge.”

Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell (pictured) said: “These awards reflect and spotlight the tremendous journalism that can be found every day or every week across the UK in regional and local newspapers that represent their readers and serve their communities so well.”

The awards ceremony, hosted by broadcaster Nick Ferrari, will start at 12noon and will be followed by lunch.

For tickets or tables for the event please contact Kate McMillan at kate.mcmillan@societyofeditors.org or on 07736 070066. Tickets for industry members are £65 and £75 (+ VAT) for those outside the industry.
