Sir Hayden Phillips updates on IPSO Appointments Process

Sir Hayden Phillips, chairman of the independent panel selecting the chair and board members for the Independent Press Standards Organisation, has provided an update this week on the process of appointing the chair and board.

As reported by the Newspaper Society: Sir Hayden Phillips said: “I would like to take this opportunity to bring everyone up to date on the process of appointing the chair and the board of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO). I am pleased to report that there has been considerable interest and we have received a large number of high quality applications.

“The panel I chair is on track to appoint the chair of IPSO by the beginning of May. Once appointed, the chair will join my appointments panel to select the rest of the board, with a view to having IPSO up and running in early June.

“This is a little later than the 1 May start date originally envisaged but because of the large number of applications we now feel it sensible to allow ourselves more time. While it is important for IPSO to be operational as soon as possible, our view is that what matters most is to get the process right for these important roles.”

Sir Hayden Phillips is chairing an independent panel to select a chair and board for IPSO, the new regulator of the press. His fellow committee members are Lord Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood , Dame Denise Platt, Paul Horrocks and John Witherow.
