Stream acquires 50% stake in Mate Media Group

Stream Publishing has confirmed its acquisition of 50% of the Amsterdam-based publisher, Mate Media Group, and with it the English language rights to Winq magazine and an International Edition already sold in 32 countries worldwide.

According to Stream Publishing: A luxury lifestyle magazine for gay men, with a uniquely global perspective, Winq has been published in multiple languages from the Netherlands since 2005, and has developed an enviable reputation for its sophisticated blend of style, wit and intelligence.

A premium format with the highest production values houses an unrivalled network of award-winning international writers, photographers and designers – delivering content based around people, politics, fashion, design, travel, culture and health.

Seeking a targeted readership of 25,000 affluent, educated gay men, aged from 30 upwards, Winq’s audience of free-thinking early adopters reflects a changing gay community that’s increasingly developed, fast-maturing and at ease with itself.

Says Darren Styles, Managing Director of Stream Publishing and formerly the first (and to date only) gay Publisher of Attitude magazine in its nigh two decades: “Winq is a different kind of gay magazine, representative of an evolved lifestyle – less encumbered by fear and loathing, better balanced and more resolved. As well as looking beautiful, Winq is a great read – a global band of hugely accomplished writers treading often difficult ground to challenge and inspire, as well as entertain. It’s a great fit for our stable of luxury titles.

“Everybody at Stream Publishing is delighted, of course, not only to have secured the English language rights to Winq, and with them the established International Edition, but also to have landed our first overseas footprint with this exciting joint venture in the form of Mate Media Group. Together with our new Dutch colleagues, we see this as the first step in a dynamic fusion of talent and opportunity.”

Says Edwin Reinerie, Publisher of Winq Netherlands and one of the founders of the title: “From the outset we have had a clear vision of, and indeed coveted, Winq’s genuinely global editorial perspective. Our content, and the contributors that provide it, offer an insight into gay culture the world over that you simply won’t find anywhere else. It is, therefore, both a thrill for us and entirely fitting that we should link with a UK publisher to develop our international offering still further. We will do great things together, of that I’m sure.”

The first edition of Winq UK will hit newsstands from 20th February 2014 and will be distributed nationally and internationally by COMAG. A sophisticated digital edition will be available to download from the App Store and on Android.
