ABC rewrites the rules!

ABC has undertaken a major exercise to rewrite its Reporting Standards to make them easier to use.

After consultation with the industry the new rules have moved to a principle-based approach. This allows for more flexibility to deal with new or alternative methods of circulation, documentation or promotion, says the ABC.

The new Reporting Standards have also harmonised common names and definitions across sectors. Each rule is outlined by a simple definition first, underpinned by its principles and then followed by more detailed requirements. Separate guidance notes provide common examples and applications of achieving the Reporting Standard requirements. This new format allows users to view only the level of detail that they require.

An interactive microsite has also been developed to make the new rules easier to navigate. You can now also copy, share and create PDFs of single sections of the ABC Reporting Standards. A search function allows you to look for keywords or phrases within the rules and an executive summary shows just the key definitions and principles for a quick overview.

Jane Wolfson, Joint Head of Investment at Initiative comments: “Because the ABC Reporting Standards are so in-depth sometimes it’s hard to find what you need quickly. This initiative has made them much easier to use and with the online format offering search functionality, now I and the team can get the level of detail we need at a glance.”

Marcus Rich, Commercial Managing Director of DMG Media comments: “In a fast moving media world ABC has recognised the need for its Reporting Standards to be flexible enough to encompass new methodologies as they arise. This innovative, principle led approach has given publishers more opportunity to ensure all products meet industry-agreed standards.”
