Guardian partners with Spotify

The Guardian has announced that it has partnered with Spotify to create a music app for the new Spotify Platform.

Using the Guardian's Open Platform service, the app brings the latest album reviews from the Guardian and Observer straight to Spotify's engaged music community at the touch of a button.

The Guardian app for Spotify builds on Guardian News & Media's digital-first strategy, which was announced earlier this year. Once clicking on the app, which will be located in the new App Finder section on the Spotify player, users can read album reviews from the Guardian and Observer, listen to those albums, star their favourite tracks and share albums with their friends in Spotify. Users will also be directed to the Guardian's website from the app where they can rate or review albums.

Caspar Llewellyn Smith, music editor, Guardian News & Media, said: "We've brought our award-winning journalism to a range of new platforms this year, and opened up what we do to our readers in a number of innovative ways. It's fitting that we should end 2011 with a Guardian music app for Spotify that will make for even greater engagement with passionate fans of music.

"We're big admirers of Spotify, and have recently partnered with them for a series of exclusive gigs. Now, with our app, which allows Spotify users to read our latest album reviews within the service, I think we're adding real value to what it is they do. It's also a great illustration of what third parties can do with the Guardian's ground-breaking Open Platform."

Daniel Ek, CEO and Founder of Spotify, commented: "Today Spotify brings music to the party and becomes a music platform, with the launch of truly integrated apps inside Spotify from the best and brightest. We've worked closely with the Guardian to deliver a unique app, layering even more fun and social musical experiences into Spotify."

The Guardian is the media partner for Spotify Live, a series of intimate gigs at The Lexington in London.
