IET to offer video content to China

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced an exclusive deal with EDU&SUN, a leading provider of educational resources in China, to provide IET.tv content to potentially 25 million students at technical universities across the country.

This is the first licensing agreement of its kind for this content by the IET, which is aiming to expand its presence in China as part of its global digital development.

The agreement will see EDU&SUN offer access to all IET.tv professional lecture content from late autumn 2012. The online resource connects users to lectures, seminars, conferences and webcasts from practising engineers, technologists and key industry speakers. The IET.tv video collection comprises over 3,500 presentations from 2002 to date, with 450-500 new videos added to the collection each year. They are arranged in eight technology channels including communications, electronics, manufacturing and power.

“Since 1871 we have established a reputation for delivering some of the industry’s leading insight and driving engineering innovation across the globe. IET.tv has become a major part of our offering and we’re pleased to be working with EDU&SUN to deliver it into China,” explains Daniel Smith, Head of Academic Publishing at the IET. “EDU&SUN has a unique insight into the Chinese academic video area which will help us ensure our IET.tv content is reaching the right audience and that those students and lecturers are able to use our resources effectively. It also represents a change of pace in the IETs engagement in China where we see enormous potential both in terms of sales and content acquisition.”

In the run up to the next academic year, EDU&SUN will set up the access portal through which it will offer IET.tv. This will be simple to use and ensure students and academics are able to access all videos quickly and easily. Those academics wishing to subscribe will be able to do so via EDU&SUN’s website.

Liu Shangwu at EDU&SUN, commented: “China’s heritage as a leader in technological development makes our academic community a core IET audience, and through this partnership our students and universities will gain access to some of the world’s leading research. This will help place China at the forefront of engineering and technology innovation. In addition, we will be able to provide a 24-hour service to Chinese subscribers. For example, we provide a customer service hotline and round-the-clock online support. This level of local service is vital to ensure people get the most out of the IET and we’re delighted to have been chosen to deliver it.”
