IOP Publishing (IOPP) has achieved a 36% reduction in carbon emissions compared to its 2020 baseline as part of its sustainability journey.
The Publisher says this achievement reflects its commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of its operations and supporting a more sustainable, diverse, and equitable future for the global scientific community.
According to IOPP, key milestones on its journey toward greater sustainability include the move to its new, energy-efficient head office in Bristol, designed to deliver long-term reductions in environmental impact. IOPP’s digital‑first publishing strategy also continues to generate significant emissions savings across the entire content lifecycle. Further progress has been achieved throughout its supply chain, supported by active engagement with suppliers, which it says has already led to measurable reductions.
Looking ahead, IOPP says it will continue cutting its Scope 3 emissions, which make up around 90% of its footprint. The most significant opportunities lie in purchased goods and services, business travel, and employee commuting which represent the organisation’s largest sources of emissions.
“Our progress demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is embedded into business decisions,” said Liz Martin, head of content and production & sustainability lead at IOPP. “We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far and remain committed to driving further positive change across our operations and taking our colleagues with us on this journey.”
Since 2020, IOPP has worked to understand its full environmental impact, identify areas for change, and track progress transparently.
