Mature Times Goes Mobile

Mature Times, the free newspaper for the over-50s, has gone mobile after launching a new app for smart phones and tablets.

The publishers of Mature Times say: The app, which is available to download at no cost, delivers past and present copies of the paper in full, direct to the iPhone and iPad.

It has been developed to serve the growing number of 'silver surfers' who enjoy the benefits new technology offers the older generation.

Research has proven how accessing content via smartphones and tablets is particularly helpful to mature audiences, as a backlit screen and the ability to zoom in on text can make reading easier.

Currently, 80 per cent of over-65s have access to a mobile phone, with half actively considering upgrading their model to a 'smart' model.

Mature Times already has a thriving online community, with its website www.maturetimes.co.uk, as well as communicating with readers via Facebook and Twitter.

The app, which is already live, is a simple way to view the paper in full at a convenient time and place - with the latest issue arriving days before the paper hits shelves.

Andrew Young, Mature Times editor, said he was "very proud" of the app and hoped it would be a big hit with already tech-savvy readers - as well as encouraging those who have yet to take the plunge, to give smart phones and tablets a go.

He said: "As older people increasingly embrace the real advantages of technology we want to make the newspaper as accessible as we can. The Mature Times app enables them to read the newspaper in its entirety wherever they are.”

“Older people have been left out of the technology loop far too long and we intend to play our part in helping them connect with others as a tangible way of reducing loneliness and isolation.”

“We also anticipate that there will be strong demand for the app from those who have emigrated or retired abroad, so they can keep in touch with what’s happening in the UK.”

Technology can be a daunting prospect for older people so the app is easy to use - simply delivering full copies of their familiar paper to the iPad and iPhone, or compatible tablets.

Over half a million readers already enjoy breaking news, views, features and competitions in the paper, on the Mature Times website, Twitter feed and Facebook page.

Users can browse quality editorial on issues that matter to the over-50s, as well as lifestyle features and expert advice that the team at Mature Times has spent more than 20 years tailoring to the older generation.

Mature Times' strong campaigning ethos will continue in print and online versions, giving readers an opportunity to get involved and make a real difference.

Andrew Young added: "There are an increasing number of apps suitable for older people that create a new common ground between them, their children, and their grandchildren.  They are now discovering that they have the ability to connect families across the globe in a way that would never have been possible a few years ago.”

The Mature Times app can be downloaded from the iTunes store.
