NFRN anger at Newsquest terms cut

25 July: Regional newspaper publisher Newsquest has angered the NFRN by increasing the cover prices on two more of its newspapers – this time in Yorkshire - while cutting retailer terms.

According to the NFRN: From today (July 25) the Craven Herald has risen in price from 75p to £1 but retailers will now receive just 22 per cent for every copy sold compared to the 26.5 per cent they earned previously.

At the same time the price of the Keighley News has increased from 65p to 80p, but the retailers’ terms have fallen from 27.2 per cent to 23.5 per cent.

Chairman of the NFRN’s News Operations Committee Alan Smith (pictured) said: “To hike up the prices of these two Yorkshire titles in such economically challenging times and, at the same time, turn your back on the very people you rely on to sell your papers is beyond contempt. We are, frankly, stunned that Newsquest can so arrogantly dismiss the concerns of both the readers of these two titles and the retailers who support them.”
