Pay a Realistic Wage for Advertising Inserts, Publishers are Told

Independent newsagents have thanked The Guardian for increasing the payments it makes to home news delivery retailers when third party advertising inserts weigh more than 70g, but say certain other newspapers should hang their heads in shame for failing to pay a realistic rate.

Following representations from National President Colin Fletcher and the NFRN’s news and magazines department, The Guardian has announced increases across all four weight bands. From April 1, HND newsagents who are registered for the payment scheme will receive 2.75p for inserts weighing between 70 and 100g; 3.35p for 101-200g, 5.75p for 201-300g and 7p for 301-400g.

National President Colin Fletcher said: “We are pleased that The Guardian has recognised the work involved in inserting and distributing third party inserts and has taken a step in the right direction by upping its payments. However, there are still some newspaper publishers who should hang their heads in shame, firstly, for failing to pay a realistic rate and secondly, because many of the payments do not come through until months after the inserts have actually been distributed.

“We know that publishers are rewarded handsomely by advertisers for accepting these publications, so come on guys, with an industry agreement to review the handling allowance for third party inserts every year, the time for a cash injection for HND retailers is long overdue and let’s speed up the payments too, so members aren’t waiting months to be properly rewarded.”
