Simon Heffer praised the standard of entries, saying that those who had taken part in these awards had shown that they had the potential to consider a career in journalism, whether in print or by grasping the new opportunities online.
The Master of the Stationers’ Company, Kevin Dewey, said the Company’s passion for words went back over 600 years and the Shine School Media Awards were an investment in passing on that passion to a new generation.
Caistor Focus published by Caistor Grammar School, took the prize for Best Newspaper, sponsored by the Newspaper Society; the Best Magazine category, sponsored by CLA, was won by City of London School with The Citizen; and the winner in the Best Online Publication category, sponsored by the Stationers’ Foundation, was Abridged from Kingsbridge Community College.
These teams have each won a cheque for £1,000, the chance to attend a workshop at the Times Education Supplement’s editorial office and Quark Xpress 9.
The winners in ten other categories won QuarkXPress 9 systems for their schools.

The judges awarded the Harrison Cup to the team from St Thomas More High School. Their magazines was set up to make a profit to be donated to charity right from the start and their community involvement and initiatives shine out as a beacon to aspiring winners in future years.
The Stationers’ Foundation is the charitable arm of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. Its mission is to promote and encourage education and research in the Communication and Content industries, to provide financial assistance and care to those who work or have worked in those industries and their dependents in time of need to provide a well managed library and archive for the Stationers’ Company and to support, amongst others, the charities of the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London and the Royal Marines.
The students from those schools whose publications were nominees for awards spent the morning learning from sponsors and other supporters of the awards about careers in the media and also about issues facing the industry. City University who have an undergraduate course in journalism ran a workshop based on an edition of Metro, CreativeSkillset spoke about apprenticeships in the industry, Robert Horne, Antalis and Two Sides were there talking about paper, Sangorski Bookbinders and PPA both delivered masterclasses. Hearst Magazines and BBC Worldwide represented the consumer magazine publishing world and The Institute of Administrative Management was also there with its own award-winning magazine Manager.
