Steaming ahead to Southampton

Final details are being put into place for this year’s Society of Editors’ Conference in one of the UK’s busiest gateway ports.

President Ian Murray will host the Society of Editors’ Conference (9-11 November), an event that draws together editors and industry big-hitters from across the media. As Editor-in-Chief of the Southern Daily Echo, Murray, says the conference is set to discuss the most important issues facing the media today.

“IPSO chairman Sir Alan Moses will set the conference alight on Sunday November 9 with his Society of Editors Lecture and we have worked hard to ensure that subjects for the following debates are those that matter most to editors,” he said.

“We will be asking top industry figures to reveal their visions for the future. ‘Where now for the media?’ is a wide-ranging topic and in the spotlight will be several top figures giving us their view of the future from both sides of the Atlantic – including Larry Kramer, publisher of USA Today.

“We will put severely strained police and media relations under the microscope.

“Following the Scottish referendum, English votes for English MPs and devolution for Wales and Northern Ireland, will feature ever larger for the attention of our readers, listeners and viewers. But what will this mean for the media both national and local? We will be finding out.

“And with football and sports coverage in general becoming dominated by the big clubs and media with deep pockets, we ask how can other papers and broadcasters compete and protect their coverage which is essential to their audiences?

“In a very practical sense, we will be hearing and debating how training for everyone in our newsrooms and organisations, from new starters to those already in the editor’s chair must be advanced, through their careers.

“With the BBC reporting back on pledges it has made to work with local media, and a range of other must-attend debates, Southampton 2014 is set to offer something for everyone.”
