Trinity Mirror makes two senior appointments

Trinity Mirror has promoted Allan Rennie to the role of managing director of Media Scotland and appointed Russell Borthwick as managing director, North East.

Allan, who retains his current responsibilities as editor in chief, takes up his expanded role with immediate effect.

Mark Hollinshead, Trinity Mirror’s chief operating officer, said: “I am delighted to announce that Allan has been promoted to this role as he is one of the country’s most experienced media executives.

“It’s an exciting time for Media Scotland – in the last year we launched new titles and our digital growth has been impressive. Media Scotland has established itself as the country’s leading multi-platform publisher and under Allan’s stewardship I am confident our audience reach will grow still further.”

Trinity Mirror has also appointed Russell Borthwick as managing director, North East who will take full responsibility for the publishing businesses in Newcastle and Teesside.

Russell, who takes up his role in March, is a well-regarded business leader in the north-east having set up and run Press Ahead, an award-winning agency with a roster of high-profile clients.

Mark, said: “Russell has a wealth of experience in publishing and through the success of his own business he has built up a extensive client base in the north-east and beyond. Russell is a great leader and a strong addition to the management team.”

At the end of February Denise West, Managing Director, Media Scotland and North East will be leaving the business after 17 years with the company.

Mark, said: “Denise has established an exemplary track record of performance and delivery in her varied career with the company but has now decided to leave to pursue fresh challenges. We wish her every success for the future.”

Allan, who lives in Dunblane, is one of the country's most experienced media executives. He joined the Daily Record as assistant features editor in 1993, became editor of the Sunday Mail in 2000 and was editorial director of Trinity Mirror's national titles before returning as editor in chief of Media Scotland in 2011.

About Russell Borthwick

Russell started and built Press Ahead, a business providing award winning market research and strategy, advertising and marketing, PR, creative service and project management to a high profile client base in the north-east and beyond.

Prior to this, Russell held a variety of senior marketing, sales and commercial roles at TRN and Trinity Mirror including Consumer Marketing Director at Gazette Media Company, Group Head of Marketing Development and Regional Marketing and Business Development Director for the North East region.
