Archant Print wins Green accolade

Archant Print’s green credentials have been given a boost with the presentation of a Green Skills Award at the Business in The Community East of England Awards gala dinner, completing a hat-trick of accolades.

Almost 250 guests attended the dinner at Childerley Hall near Cambridge to celebrate the best examples of responsible business and the winners in this year’s Responsible Business Awards.

Archant Print was given the Local Impact - Green Skills Award which “recognise a business that has encouraged and developed their employees' green skills resulting in significantly improvements to the environmental impact of the business.”

Judges said: “Archant want to continue to develop, and they want to do it in a way that has less impact on the environment.  From reducing the amount of energy, water and paper they use, to looking at greener transportation for employees, work is already under way to ensure they achieve their aims, but to succeed they need everyone who works at Archant to do their bit.”

Archant Print Centre director, Clive Want, who collected the award with David Arkwright, Improvement & Safety Coordinator, at the June 19 dinner, said: “This is the third accolade in as many months for Archant Print.

“We were named Niche Newspaper Printer of the year at the Newspaper Awards, we were recognised for our safety record by RoSPA and now we have won this award. Having picked up accolades for quality, safety and the environment, we are over the moon and it is the icing on the cake – so very well done to all those involved.”

The Archant entry referred to a number of initiatives:

• Archant recently signed a contract with Palm Paper, which means that all 30,000 tonnes of newsprint they use annually will come from just 50 miles down the road in King’s Lynn, rather than from Russia, North America and Scandinavia.

• It introduced an eco-driving training trial with 35 distribution drivers resulting in a reduced fuel bill and transportation costs for newsprint delivery.

• Archant is committed to continuous improvement in the efficiency with which energy is used and the prevention and avoidance of energy waste. They have a prime objective of reducing their total energy consumption each year by at least 2.5%, after taking into account changes in levels of activity, weather and other relevant factors.
