The awards were held by the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) in the Ballroom at Rosewood London, with entertainment including resident illustrator Jacqueline Bissett and the London Essentials.
The BSME says the annual awards ceremony is the highlight of its calendar, designed to celebrate editorial excellence and innovation across digital and print publications in the UK.
The event was hosted by Ted Lasso actor Kola Bokinni and Gideon Spanier, BSME chair 2024 and editor-in-chief at Campaign.
Gideon said: "Well done to all the winners of the BSME Awards 2024 and thank you to everyone who entered. The BSME champions trusted journalism, editorial innovation and greater diversity, equity and inclusion and it was fantastic to see those themes reflected in the winning work. We are stronger as an industry when we collaborate and it was a brilliant evening at the sold-out awards ceremony at Rosewood London. Thank you to all of our sponsors who supported the BSME Awards.
"There is still work to do to make magazine media more accessible to everyone and we were delighted that our raffle was in aid of Creative Access, which helps people from historically under-represented groups get into the creative industries."
Winners included editor-in-chief of Computer Weekly, Bryan Glick, who was named Editors' Editor of the Year, while the Mark Boxer lifetime achievement award went to Gaby Huddart, former editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping.
Editors' Editor of the Year went to Bryan Glick, editor-in-chief at Computer Weekly. The award was presented to Bryan by Jo Hamilton, a former subpostmaster who was a victim of the Post Office scandal when she was wrongly accused and convicted of false accounting.
"From their first story in 2009 to where we are today, 500 articles later, Computer Weekly has doggedly reported this dreadful story," said Jo. "So can I ask Bryan Glick to come and receive this award and thank him for his great editorial work, for giving us credibility and helping us speak truth to power."
The Mark Boxer Award - otherwise known as the BSME's lifetime achievement award - was awarded to Gaby Huddart, former editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping.
Voted for by members of the BSME committee, the BSME says the Mark Boxer Award is a special recognition of someone who has shown an outstanding commitment to magazine journalism throughout their whole career. Gaby was presented with the award by award-winning broadcaster Anita Rani, who appeared on the cover of Good Housekeeping earlier this year, shortly before Gaby stepped down as editor-in-chief.
"Our winner is someone who believes in the importance of trusted journalism, to help, to inspire and to entertain," said Anita. "Throughout her career for more than 30 years, she has shown she believes in championing the interests of her readers and the power of the written word."
BSME and Creative Access
Creative Access are one of the UK’s leading inclusivity organisations in the creative industries. They are impact driven and have a mission to build a creative economy which reflects the society it serves. They're driven by their pillars ACCESS + THRIVE = IMPACT, added BSME.
Founded in 2012, BSME says Creative Access create practical DE&I programmes that open up career access, help people from historically under-represented groups thrive and create real impact.
They work with hundreds of partners across film, TV, the arts, theatre, museums, advertising, publishing and beyond and support thousands of individuals each year, from groups historically under-represented in the sector in terms of ethnicity, disability and lower socio-economic status, to access new careers and thrive in their existing ones.
