Cameron visits EDP offices

Prime Minister David Cameron visited the Eastern Daily Press head office in Norwich on Friday after answering the paper’s rallying call to visit the region to see how an upgrade to the A47 could help Norfolk and Suffolk become Britain’s new powerhouse economy.

The prime minister visited the region to meet business leaders, politicians and local party members, but also called into Archant Norfolk’s Prospect House HQ where he hailed communities in Norfolk and Suffolk for rallying around to help those whose lives were turned upside down by last month’s floods.

The visit came as the Eastern Daily Press appeal to help those affected soared to more than £180,000.

Mr Cameron told members of the flood appeal committee, who were meeting at Prospect House: “Congratulations on what you have done in raising the money. How did you do it so quickly? Nearly £200,000 is pretty good work. What was the key?”

He said: “It seemed to me, when I came to Wells, the flood wardens, the Environment Agency and everyone was playing their part.”

Donations to the EDP Flood Appeal, launched in the aftermath of the December 5 floods, are still coming in from individuals and businesses.

He also spoke of how “crucial” the A47 trunk road upgrade is.

Last week, the EDP ran a front page headline “Yes we Cam”, calling for action on the A47 trunk road which stretches from Great Yarmouth into the Midlands.

The premier made it clear in an exclusive with the paper ahead of his visit, that he was serious about investment in road and rail infrastructure in Norfolk and Suffolk.

He was also interviewed by public affairs correspondent Dan Grimmer and Archant Anglia political editor Annabelle Dickson at Prospect House and appeared on Mustard TV, interviewed by Rob Setchell.
