Daily Star price rise pleases NFRN

An announcement from newspaper publisher Northern & Shell that the Daily Star on Saturday is to go back to its pre-February 2012 price of 60p has been welcomed by the NFRN.

Commenting on the 5p increase, which is accompanied with a pro rata increase in retail terms and which takes effect from December 28, National President Colin Fletcher said: “We are pleased to see the cover price of the Saturday edition of the Daily Star finally back up to 60p. Members were outraged and seriously out of pocket when Northern & Shell decided to enter into a price war when the Sun launched its Sunday edition back in February 2012. It’s good that common sense has prevailed and the 60p cover price has been restored.”

From December 26, Monday to Friday editions of the Daily Star are also going up by 5p to 40p, while in England and Wales, the price of the Daily Express will rise from 50p to 55p for weekday editions and from 80p to 85p on Saturdays. In Scotland the cover price of the Scottish Daily Express will increase to 50p Monday to Friday and to 80p on Saturdays. In England, Wales and Scotland the Sunday Express will cost £1.40 from December 29.

Northern and Shell has confirmed that retail terms will rise pro-rata on all these editions.

NFRN Chief Executive Paul Baxter said he was pleased that the retailers’ margins were being maintained. “But times are tough and consumers are watching every penny they spend so Northern & Shell needs to exercise caution regarding any future price increases.”
