Egmont secures Minecraft publishing rights

Egmont Publishing Group has signed a deal with Mojang for book and magazine publishing rights around the BAFTA award-winning game, Minecraft. Rights are for all territories excluding the USA.

According to Egmont, Minecraft is a complex and compelling universe where players can create and build anything they like with virtual bricks, craft tools to help gather resources, farm, hunt, sail and, of course, mine!

The game can be played in multiple game modes on numerous devices. It has 40 million registered users, 7.3m of whom are paying users.

The iPhone App launched earlier this year at £4.99 and sold 500,000 units in 2 months alone. Mojang are developing a strong licensee programme with the recent launch of their Xbox game and LEGO Minecraft set.

Emma Cairns Smith, Licence Acquisition Director, Egmont UK said: “A property like Minecraft comes around once in a lifetime and we are thrilled to be on board as master publisher. Minecraft is a totally captivating game and are so excited about partnering with Mojang to create compelling publishing content for their millions of devoted fans.”

David Riley, Managing Director, Egmont Publishing Group said: “Minecraft tutorials are always in the top 10 viewed videos, on any day, on YouTube so we know there’s a huge fan-base hungry for knowledge about the game.”

He continued: “We also know how children love to build things and they love gaming online. Publishing rights for this virtual building blocks game represent a huge opportunity for us. The deal is a great fit with Egmont and sits brilliantly amidst our growing portfolio of viral video, social media, virtual world, mobile and online gaming entertainment properties.”

Carl Manneh, CEO, Mojang commented: “We're excited to partner with Egmont to bring Minecraft to a new format. With the help of the amazing Minecraft community we're confident that we can help create intriguing content.”
