Graham Ruddick announced as Guardian’s media editor

Guardian News & Media has announced that Graham Ruddick has been appointed media editor, and will lead on all media coverage across print and digital working closely with Mark Sweney, the Guardian’s media business correspondent.

Currently senior business reporter, his appointment comes as Jane Martinson, the head of media, has decided to leave the Guardian staff in July. Jane will remain a media columnist - joining the Guardian’s roster of media commentators including Roy Greenslade, Emily Bell and Afua Hirsch, and Peter Preston in the Observer.

On his appointment Graham said: “The Guardian has always set the agenda when it comes to media reporting, and I’m excited to be leading our coverage at a time when new and established media organisations are under more scrutiny than ever.”

Jane Martinson said: “It has been a huge privilege and honour to have worked at the Guardian. I am thrilled to be able to continue writing for it at such a fascinating time for the media and as I pursue new challenges and other opportunities."

Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media said: “Graham is a rising talent who has sharp news acumen, tenacity and a fearless approach to getting stories. The media industry is facing unprecedented changes and Graham will bring his expertise to ensure the Guardian’s coverage scrutinises and leads the field.

“Jane Martinson’s knowledge of the media sector is second to none, and I’m very pleased she will continue to write for us on a regular basis, looking at the trends and stories beyond the headlines.”

Graham joined the Guardian in 2015 from the Telegraph, where he held a number of positions including deputy business editor, retail correspondent and city reporter.

Jane joined the Guardian in 1999 as the publication’s US business editor. Along with her most recent position as head of media, Jane has held a number of roles across the publication, including media editor and women’s editor.
