Katharine Viner: “It is clear that while there is little relief from the violence and misery, whether in Gaza, Ukraine or Sudan or beyond, the appeal has offered extremely positive glimmers of hope.”

Guardian and Observer say the total marks the highest sum raised by the annual appeal since 2016 and the 10th successive year that readers have given more than £1m. The 2024 charity appeal, which closed on Sunday, saw over 15,000 readers donate.

Médecins Sans Frontières and War Child are international aid charities that provide frontline emergency medical care and specialist psychological support respectively to the victims of war and violence, while Parallel Histories is a small UK-based charity with a mission to bring divided communities together by helping schools teach sensitive and contested histories of conflict.

Over the past decade, the publisher says readers have raised nearly £15m for good causes, including fighting child poverty and tackling the climate crisis.

In a closing column published at the weekend, the Guardian’s editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner, wrote: “It is clear that while there is little relief from the violence and misery, whether in Gaza, Ukraine or Sudan or beyond, the appeal has offered extremely positive glimmers of hope.”

The 2024 charity appeal featured an annual telethon giving readers the chance to donate and speak with their favourite journalists, while the Guardian Bookshop donated 20p from every sale to the charity appeal during the campaign. The Guardian Bookshop is run by Monwell, a small and independent ecommerce company specialising in books and the media industry.
