Financial Times makes senior editorial appointments
Brooke Masters: “The US is central to the political, financial and technological changes shaping the world, and this team puts some of our strongest people in place to shape that coverage.”

The Financial Times announced earlier this month that it has made a series of senior editorial appointments to bolster coverage of American politics, policy, business and markets ahead of the 2028 presidential election. The new roles will take effect in January.

Derek Brower has been appointed Washington bureau chief, leading the FT’s reporting from the US capital. Brower will oversee the Washington bureau and shape the FT’s approach to the Trump administration, US politics and policy, and their impact on the economy and the wider world.

Adam Samson will become US news editor, based in New York. He will lead the FT’s US news operation and set editorial priorities for the FT’s more than 80 journalists across North America, with responsibility for coverage spanning politics, markets and business. Samson will work closely with news desks in London and Hong Kong as part of the FT’s global newsroom.

As part of these changes, James Politi has been appointed US political news editor in Washington. He will marshal the FT’s day-to-day coverage of the Trump administration, Congress and other major political developments, while serving as the key link between the Washington bureau and news desks in New York and London. He will also play a central role in planning for the 2028 presidential election.

Cat Rutter Pooley has been named senior US companies and markets news editor in New York. She will be responsible for coverage of American finance, companies and markets, from breaking news to analysis and enterprise reporting.

“The US is central to the political, financial and technological changes shaping the world, and this team puts some of our strongest people in place to shape that coverage,” said Brooke Masters, US managing editor at the FT. “Derek, Adam, James and Cat bring deep expertise and experience to their roles, and will ensure the FT continues to deliver ambitious, authoritative reporting from across the US at a consequential moment for the country.”
