Guardian launches new opinion newsletter

The Guardian last week launched a new weekly newsletter from its opinion desk.

Guardian launches new opinion newsletter
Toby Moses said: “We hope this newsletter will give audiences a glimpse into how we work, new perspectives on the stories beyond what is able to be covered in the Opinion pages."

The Guardian says the new weekly newsletter, called ‘Matters of Opinion’, is a place for writers to give a sense of the thought processes and conversations that shape their outlook on the world – whether that be the war in Ukraine or Taylor Swift's engagement.

According to the publisher, every Saturday, the newsletter will feature a Guardian columnist, writer or editor on what they are thinking about, watching and reading, and how that helps form the comment pieces that enthuse, infuriate and inspire audiences in print and online.

Matters of Opinion is another of the growing ways in which the Guardian connects people with its writers and builds upon the Guardian community, added the publisher. This includes over two million supporters worldwide and, revealed last week, now over five million newsletter subscribers, the publisher continued.

The first newsletter out last Friday is written by executive editor of opinion Hugh Muir, who says: “Part of the joy of working with the Guardian’s brilliant slate of writers is speaking to them every week and hearing how their views develop, and how they reach their conclusions – and we wanted to give our audience a chance to experience that too.”

Head of newsletters Toby Moses said: “Opinion sections have a long history of notebooks and diaries - a place where writers can talk about the things that caught their eye, that give the readers an insight into who they are, how their minds work, and the conversations happening in the newsroom. They were building engaged communities long before social media made connecting writers with readers a part of everyday life.

“We hope this newsletter will give audiences a glimpse into how we work, new perspectives on the stories beyond what is able to be covered in the Opinion pages, and a chance to have conversations with their favourite writers about what they’ve been reading and thinking about too.”

The publisher says Matters of Opinion will be in inboxes every Saturday at midday.
