At the weekend the Guardian published its 2026 university guide.

Rachel Hall: “We know how much goes into the decision about where to study, from the quality of teaching to the experience of student life.”

The Guardian University Guide 2026 was published on Saturday 13 September as a free supplement in the print edition of the Guardian, and is available online.

According to the publisher, this year’s top five universities are:

  1. Oxford
  2. St Andrews
  3. Cambridge
  4. London School of Economics
  5. Durham

Running for decades, the Guardian says the guide is one of the UK’s most respected university rankings and a trusted source for students and families deciding where and what to study, both in the UK and internationally.

Universities are ranked on the factors that matter most to students, the publisher continued, including satisfaction with teaching and feedback, course completion rates, and graduate outcomes. Subject-specific tables help applicants compare courses in detail and make more informed choices.

The Guardian says this year’s edition introduces new features that reflect the evolving higher education landscape, with coverage of how AI is shaping life on campus, practical advice on using clearing, and guidance on how to make the most of the university experience.

The online version includes everything from the print edition, plus full profiles of every UK university and subject area.

Rachel Hall, editor of the Guardian University Guide, said: “We know how much goes into the decision about where to study, from the quality of teaching to the experience of student life. That’s why we put so much care into the Guardian University Guide. It combines trusted rankings with fresh insight on what really shapes university today. We’re proud it continues to help students and families make confident choices about the future.”
