New paper launched for Devon's new town

Devon’s first new town since medieval times has now got its own new newspaper after Archant South West launched the Cranbrook Herald.

The September launch issue of the A4 newsprint monthly publication was put together by the existing East Devon editorial and sales teams and ran to 48 pages, with 56 pages planned for the second issue.

The free paper was delivered door-to-door and given out to 180 children at the new town primary school to take home with them.

Some 250 homes are already occupied and plans are in place for up to 6,000 new homes with a low carbon district heating network, community buildings, schools, railway station and country park.

Group editor, Phil Griffin, said: “The idea is to grow the paper’s print run as the new town grows over coming years. Midweek Herald reporters Katy Griffin, Chris Carson and Callum Lawton did sterling work bringing in a host of stories on the fledgling community – while reporting on their established patches at the same time.

“It’s only early days in the Cranbrook story, but there are strong signs that it will become a great place to live. We want to join residents on that journey to becoming a vibrant community.”

The first issue also featured on West Country Television.

This week will see the launch of a new Cranbrook Herald website coupled with feeds to a Facebook page and Twitter.
