Kennedy succeeds Laura Hill who announced she was stepping down in October, two months after the site was launched.
Hill had vowed that football would be a “key focus” of Newcastle World, but she has now left to become search engine optimisation editor for Reach plc’s Live portfolio of regional websites.
Hill’s replacement, Kennedy, began his journalistic career in 2010 as a reporter for the Newark Advertiser, before moving into sports journalism two years later when he became a football writer for the Dundee Evening Telegraph.
After four years in Dundee he began working for JPI Media’s north-east titles in a similar role.
He was a Newcastle United reporter for the Shields Gazette before joining Newcastle World as its Newcastle United writer.
