Owen Meredith: “The Future of News report today rightly highlights the enormous value news creates for our democratic society and makes some thoughtful recommendations for action to support a free and plural news media.”

Responding to the Lords Communications and Digital Committee The Future of News report, News Media Association Chief Executive Owen Meredith said yesterday: “The Future of News report today rightly highlights the enormous value news creates for our democratic society and makes some thoughtful recommendations for action to support a free and plural news media.

“Chief among these is the acknowledgement of the huge importance of copyright and IP to the creative sectors, the need for transparency over how content is used by AI firms to train Large Language Models, and the warning against adopting a flawed and unenforceable opt out regime for the use of publisher content.

“The recommendation for the Competition and Markets Authority to investigate how dominance in search is being used by tech firms to secure anticompetitive advantages is also very timely, as the regulator considers which firms and services to prioritise under the new regime for digital markets.

“We also welcome the proposals for tax breaks for local journalism and the call for Government to crack down on SLAPPs by bringing forward draft anti-SLAPP legislative proposals before the summer next year.

"We look forward to the Government’s response to the Committee.”
