PPA produces collector’s magazine to celebrate its centenary

The Professional Publishers Association (PPA) is to publish a special, ‘one-off’ magazine, ‘PPA 100’, to mark its centenary year.

The magazine, which will be distributed to guests at a special Centenary Gala Dinner at the Park Lane Hotel on 21st November 2013, will celebrate the past 100 years of the PPA and the magazine industry.

Gill Hudson, ex-editor of Reader’s Digest, Radio Times, Company and Maxim, edited the 132-page title, which was printed by Pensord using paper supplied by UPM.

The one off collector’s issue includes the following features and content:

* Vroom At The Top – Comment on the future of the industry by from the leaders charged with boldly going where no magazine publisher has gone before. Includes interviews with key industry figures from the PPA Board, such as Nicholas Coleridge of Condé Nast, Tom Bureau of Immediate Media Co, Paul Keenan of Bauer Media, Kevin Costello of Haymarket Media Group, Charlotte Stockting of Hello!, Mark Wood of Future and Arnaud de Puyfontaine of Hearst Magazines UK.

* The Cover Of The Century – after over 36,000 public votes, the competition is over. Which of the ten shortlisted titles – including Dennis the Menace on the The Beano, Daleks on the Radio Times, Empire’s breathing Darth Vader cover and Cosmopolitan’s UK launch issue - will take the title of Cover of the Century?

* Where It All Began – Take a trip back in time to 19 November 1913 to discover how the PPA was created and how it has evolved over the decades.

* At Home With A Range – There’s a magazine out there for just about every interest you can think of – take these five very different titles and their teams, for starters: Good Housekeeping, Management Today, and British Baker.

* 100 Great Magazine Moments – From Margaret Thatcher’s controversial interview with Women’s Own in 1987 to Kate Moss being catapulted to fame after her front cover appearance on The Face, and from Top of the Pops inventing nicknames for The Spice Girls to the success of the London 2012 Olympics’ daily magazine, the PPA takes a look at 100 magazine moments that have influenced and embedded themselves within the national consciousness.

* Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes – In the middle of a publishing revolution, what’s it like to be on the front line? Publishers, leading industry suppliers and advertisers consider the rapid changes impacting on magazine publishing, and look ahead to the future.

* Magazines In The Future – The Bright Young Things who were singled out in the PPA’s New Talent Awards give their take on what it’s like to work in magazine publishing in 2013.

* Thank You And Goodnight – PPA CEO Barry McIlheney looks forward to the next 100 years

‘PPA 100’ also contains a quiz for readers to test their magazine knowledge.

Gill Hudson, Editor-in-Chief, PPA 100, said: "When you read some of the great moments in magazine history in PPA 100 – and some of them are truly spine-tingling – it’s a real reminder that these moments all come from inspired ideas, whether that’s an agenda-setting campaign, a ground-breaking interview, setting a new trend, or coming up with a brilliant spoof. Magazines are all about passion, creativity and inspiration – it’s something British magazines lead the world in – and these are the qualities that will continue to drive our industry over the next 100 years."

Barry McIlheney, CEO, PPA, said: “I am thrilled to be leading the industry as it marks its centenary and embarks upon its next 100 years. Throughout 2013, we have been keen to strike a balance between commemorating the PPA itself and celebrating our members and our industry; acknowledging our past but also looking to our future. The same is true of this souvenir magazine, PPA 100, which is at once about the association itself as well as our members, and the magazine and business information brands they represent today.

The PPA now sets out on its second century of leading and serving its members - of promoting, protecting, and advancing our industry.”
