Regional Press Awards – shortlists announced

Shortlists for the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards for 2014 have been announced.

The Regional Press Awards, which celebrate the best of British regional and local newspaper journalism in 2014 in print, online and any other news platform, will be handed out at a ceremony over lunch to be held at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel on Friday 15 May 2015.

The Regional Press Awards are made possible by the lead sponsorship of UK Power Networks. They are supported by ASDA, ABC, Foot Anstey, the Gorkana Group and JTI. They are held in association with HoldtheFrontPage and the Press Association.

The Society of Editors, which has been supported by Camelot since 2001, organises the awards on behalf of the newspaper industry.

The first News Media UK AGM will be held before the ceremony. The event will also see the awarding of the Making a Difference - People’s Choice public vote organised by Local Media Works, part of News Media UK, for Local Newspaper Week.

A total of 37 candidates have been unveiled which aims to highlight the campaign work undertaken by the local press in the UK. The week begins on 11 May, when an online poll will allow members of the public to vote for their favourite campaign from the past 12 months. The winner from the selection, which can be viewed here, will be announced alongside the winner of the Society of Editors Campaign of the Year Award on the day.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by LBC radio presenter Nick Ferrari.

Chairman of the judges Paul Horrocks said: “Once again the judges have been impressed by both the quality and quantity of the entries.

“We very much look forward to welcoming the shortlisted candidates on 15 May to further celebrate the work of the regions.”

Bob Satchwell, Executive Director of the Society of Editors said: "The strength of the entries reflecting the vitality of the local and regional newspapers in the UK shows that reports of their demise are seriously premature."
