Most recently editor of Rugby World magazine and rugbyworld.com, Sarah brings a wealth of experience to the role. She has worked for two decades in sports journalism as both a writer and sub-editor for a range of UK national newspapers and magazines, before joining Rugby World, says The Telegraph.
Sarah will be responsible for publishing the monthly TWS supplement in print, as well as all women’s sport coverage across digital and social.
Sarah succeeds Anna Kessel, the publisher continued, who recently left The Telegraph after joining in 2019 as the launch editor of the ground-breaking TWS. Anna’s work at The Telegraph has been recognised through multiple awards including Supplement of the Year and the Reporting Diversity Award at the Press Awards. She was also a key contributor to the Daily Telegraph’s Sport Newspaper of the Year hat-trick at the British Sports Journalism Awards.
TWS launched in March 2019, with a commitment to deliver coverage of women’s sport. Over the past 3 years, TWS’s journalism and campaigns have resulted in change, added the publisher. The Girls, Inspired campaign launched in 2019, lobbying for better sports provision for schoolgirls and resulted in the Government pledging a new national strategy. Its maternity rights investigation highlighted how childcare provision and maternity rights across English sport were almost non-existent. Subsequent to TWS raising the issue, the first ever maternity guidelines have since been published by UK Sport.
Gary Payne, head of sport, The Telegraph said “I’m delighted that Sarah is joining our award-winning sports team to lead our coverage of Women’s Sport. The baton is passed to Sarah by launch editor Anna, who with her team has revolutionised our coverage, making TWS the gold standard for women’s sport journalism. Sarah is a great addition to the team and brings significant experience to this role to lead TWS’s next exciting chapter.”
Sarah Mockford said: “The Telegraph has led the way in its coverage of women’s sport and I am hugely excited to build on the brilliant work done by Anna and the team.”
