The Guardian announces new appointments
Josh Halliday: "I would say it's a dream come true to be appointed the Guardian's North of England editor but in truth it is far beyond anything I could have imagined when I was starting out nearly 20 years ago.”

The Guardian has confirmed Josh Halliday as north of England editor and Hannah al-Othman is confirmed as north of England correspondent.

Josh Halliday, north of England editor, says: "I would say it's a dream come true to be appointed the Guardian's North of England editor but in truth it is far beyond anything I could have imagined when I was starting out nearly 20 years ago.

"I believe I'm only the sixth person to hold the role in the past 40 years and, given the Guardian's proud heritage in Manchester, it feels like an incredibly special privilege. I inherit the role from my peerless colleague and great friend, Helen Pidd – one of the most versatile, tenacious and empathic people I know – and I will try to live up to her many achievements.

"The Guardian now boasts the strongest and biggest team of reporters outside London of any national title and I'm incredibly proud to work for an organisation that places such great emphasis on issues and perspectives from beyond the M25. I'm looking forward to all the adventures ahead."
